SPECIAL GUESTS

Kim Christiansen.jpg
Kim Christiansen

Kim Christiansen is an Anchor at 9NEWS in Denver, Colorado. Kim grew up in Colorado and graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her first job was as a writer and associate producer for the 6 a.m. news here at 9NEWS. She went on to work as a writer for the late newscasts and eventually made the transition to general assignment reporter. Her first anchor position was on 9NEWS Saturday Morning. She went on to anchor the 5 and 10 p.m. on the weekends with Ward Lucas.

Kim has won seven Heartland regional Emmy awards for spot news, news writing and news reporting. Kim is also devoted to the fight against breast cancer. She serves as the spokesperson for the Buddy Check9 program and speaks to dozens of community groups about the importance of self-exam and mammography. Kim's sister Keri was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and has taken an active role in our efforts to raise awareness about the importance of early detection. The Buddy Check 9 program has been nominated for a national community service Emmy award.

Kim is a former Miss Colorado and won a special talent award at the Miss America Scholarship pageant. She feels extremely blessed to be living and working in her hometown. She's very close to her family and considers her sister to be her best friend.

After college at the University of Kentucky, graduate school at the University of Denver Daniels College of Business, and during a career as a Probation Officer and Supervisor in Colorado’s 18th District Court, and later as a community-based-corrections administrator, I felt my career path was not completely fulfilling.

As a school kid, every classroom gave me a ready audience for antics (perhaps not so appreciated by teachers). As my best auctioneer buddy now puts it, “It doesn’t matter if they laughed with me or at me… just so they laughed near me.” I came to realize this is just me.

I always admired the rhythmic chant of a country auctioneer. Still do. In 1985 I enrolled in a ten-day learn-how-to learn auctioneering seminar in the Kansas City Stockyards. Soon after, a neighbor chairing a school fundraiser, asked me, “Are you a real auctioneer?”

I said, “No, but I think I can imitate one.”

Since then, I’ve conducted thousands of benefit auctions for hospitals, schools, churches, foundations, and diseases (research organizations) for some forty years… and counting.

Ready for some fun? Join our Heads or Tails game during tonight’s program for your chance to win an unforgettable getaway!

Here’s how it works:

  • Buy in: $50 per entry (and yes, you can buy as many entries as you’d like!).

  • How to enter: Each entry gets you a purple lei necklace—your “life” in the game. You can purchase leis at check-in or from any board member wearing a captain’s hat prior to the start of the program.

  • The game: During the program, we’ll all play Heads or Tails! Each lei you wear is one chance to stay in the game. Keep guessing correctly and stay standing—last one left wins!

  • The prize: Two tickets on Alaska or Hawaiian Airlines (up to $3,500 each). That’s $7,000 in airfare—basically, a trip anywhere in the world!

It’s a great chance to win a trip of a lifetime, all while supporting PorchLight’s mission. Don’t miss out!
